November is Men's Health Month and as this month comes to an end we wanted to highlight our Men's Wellbeing course. Stuart, one of the facilitators who supported our Men's Wellbeing has written an overview from our Autumn Term.
The Men's Wellbeing course ran from Thursday 19 September to Thurs 10 October in the Dudley base and was a blended course. The course was led by two facilitators and one of our volunteers. We had some fantastic discussions in the sessions about men's mental health and wellbeing and the students who attended were all very vocal, enthusiastic and willing to share their thoughts and experiences, and they found it useful to listen to others accounts, and there was a real connection amongst the group.
We talked about men having a healthy relationship with themselves, as well as healthy relationships with friends and relatives. Students talked about what they had learned through their lives, and what advice they would give their younger self. We also explored how the role of men had changed over the years and portrayal of men in the media. We looked at how media portrayals had changed, but also how in the main they are still the same and resistant to change, and how this can lead to toxic masculinity and reinforce gender stereotypes and conditioning.
Towards the end of the course we focused on health issues, the link between mental health and physical health and how to maintain positive health. On the end of course evaluation the students felt that the course was good, helped in their recovery journey and said that they would recommend the course to others.
Thank you Stuart for this great insight to Men's Wellbeing.
