    Why should I volunteer?

    Volunteering comes in many forms, you may volunteer in a school, a library or shop. You may volunteer by supporting a neighbour. Volunteering can take many forms but at the root of volunteering is that we are using our time, skills and energy to support others. And did you know it not only helps others it can also help you too.

    Volunteering is a great step to take in your recovery journey. It can positively impact your mind and overall wellbeing. At The Recovery College we follow the acronym CHIME, it flows through everything we do here. See how you can connect volunteering to each letter of CHIME below. 

    C Connectedness

    Volunteering can prevent feelings of Isolation. As a volunteer you can expand your social network by meeting people from different walks of life. If we pick an activity that we like and are interested in, we are likely to meet likeminded people who have the same interests. These social connections can often develop into friendships.

    H Hope and Optimism

    Volunteering can provide opportunity to develop your skills and help you to explore what is next for you. Beginning your journey as a volunteer can give you Hope and Optimism for the future. It could be the little nudge you need to think "OK. I can do this!"  Volunteering for an organisation can sometimes lead you to a form of employment and is a great thing to include on your resume if you are searching for a new role. 

    I Identity

    By volunteering you can find a new and increased confidence. You may learn new skills and learn about a different or new environment. This can help with improving your confidence and understanding who you are. 

    M Meaning and Purpose

    Volunteering can provide a sense of meaning and purpose, beyond your normal day to day activity. It can help us appreciate what we have and develop a sense of compassion for others. 

    E Empowerment

    By signing up to be a volunteer, you are taking a new step forward in your personal journey. You may see improvements to your self-esteem and develop valuable skills. You will feel empowered and uplifted seeing the work you are putting in. 


    It's important to remember that every individual has their own reason for volunteering and their own ideas about what it will do for them. There's no right or wrong approach, it's all about exploring the opportunities on offer and finding the one you know is right for you.

    The Recovery College is an educational learning environment for people who have an interest in, or personal difficulties with, mental health.

    All of our sessions are created with people who have lived experience of challenges with their own mental health along with carers and healthcare professionals.

    You do not need any formal qualifications or experience to attend the college. All of our courses are free of charge and open to anyone, aged 18 and over.
