Untold Stories, Black Minds Matter - Black History Month 2024

    1

Untold Stories is a project created by Black Minds Matter to honour the mental health experiences of older family members and friends for Black History Month.

"Inspired by this year's Black History Month theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives', we are holding space for our older community by sharing their stories around the complexities of mental health, which are so often overlooked and unheard."

There are examples on the website of these Untold Stories.

One person's story talks of how a family member was diagnosed with a mental illness, she didn't know or understand what the illness was. As she began to learn and understand this mental illness it led to a passion for Mental Health education and worked as a Mental Health Social Worker in the NHS for 20+ years. "You can be a part of this project. If you are 60 and over you can share your story. We aim to understand how identity, culture, age and environment have impacted your experience.

Here are some questions you can answer to help guide your story:

    • Do you think you have ever experienced a mental health issue in your lifetime?
    • How did your upbringing, culture or sense of identity impact your perception or experience of mental health?
    • Did you ever think to seek help?

You can share your story in writing, on a maximum of a4 or you can send a video or voice note.
