Black History is all our history, it is an integral part of the UK's history and culture and it feeds into the present day. October acts as a dedicated month for us to reflect, celebrate the experiences of Black African and Caribbean communities but we must continue to lift the voices and experiences of Black communities all year round.
We have compiled a list of organisations that are working in our communities to make a difference and create a society that is accepting of all.
MIND - https://www.mind.org.uk/news-campaigns/where-to-get-support-during-black-history-month/
"If you need support, contact our Infoline by phone, email or post. We can give you information on mental health support and signpost you towards help in your area. Our Infoline is open 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays."
Stop Hate UK - https://www.stophateuk.org/
Stop Hate UK is a 24-hour free helpline that is available for all monitored strands of a persons identity: Disability, Race, Faith/Religion/Belief, Sexual Orientation, transgender identity as well as Alternative Subculture and Gender/Misogyny.
Our 24-hour helplines remain a core function of Stop Hate UK. On a daily basis, we talk to people who are directly affected by Hate Crimes.
These conversations give us valuable insight into what people experience and how it makes them feel.
Their mission is to combat prejudice and hate, to support those effected and to educate towards a hate free society.
The motherhood group - https://themotherhoodgroup.org/
The Motherhood Group was founded by Sandra Igwe in 2016, after the traumatic birth of her first daughter, Zoe Igwe.
Black mothers are more likely to have postnatal depression than white women, and are the least likely to access support, or have follow-up treatment. The motherhood group exist to provide support and rebuild the broken trust between the community and service providers, destigmatising mental health so mothers can ask for help. They highlight what unconscious bias looks like, how it impacts mothers and dismantling racism within the healthcare system.
WE BELIEVE :Every Black mum deserves equitable care and exceptional support. By uniting organisations, amplifying community voices, pioneering change and advocacy, we're creating lasting impact across healthcare, communities, and systems
Show racism the red card - theredcard.org
Show Racism the Red Card is the UK's leading anti-racism educational charity. It was established in January 1996, thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
To this day they continue to utilise the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society and have also expanded into other sports and involved other personalities. The majority of the campaign's work involves the delivery of educational workshops to young people and adults in schools, workplaces and at events held in football stadiums.
We encourage you to look at each of these websites and see what they are doing in your local community and get involved.
