It's Black History Month.
This year, the theme highlights the profound contributions made by Black people be they leaders, activists, or pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.
On Black History Month website you can find interviews with public figures across the arts, politics and other sectors.
One interview is with Baroness Lola Young of Hornsey who is a crossbench peer in the House of Lords, cultural advocate, and campaigner for social justice. Her life and career reflect a deep commitment to learning, justice, and self-expression.
Baroness Lola Young acknowledges the importance of pioneers but she argues that labels such as 'Trailblazers' and 'one of the firsts' reinforce alienation by insinuating success is a rare/abnormal aspiration for her demographic. This thought-provoking perspective challenges institutions and society to move beyond tokenism and toward systemic inclusion, where Black individuals' achievements are normalised and celebrated. Baroness Young's achievements are not just inspiring; they are rooted in a sense of purpose and integrity. This fuels her passion to stand firm in power, pride and influence with intention.
