Day in the Life of.. Hazel

At The Recovery College facilitators play a huge part in shaping courses, providing feedback and bringing their lived experience to inform the College's policies and approaches.

Today we are chatting to Hazel.

What is your job role and what subjects do you cover?

Hi I'm Hazel and I am one of the facilitators at the Recovery College.

As a facilitator I deliver a wide range of courses that are co-produced, and designed to support individuals who experience challenges with their mental health. My role includes creating a safe space for students to be a part of, and creating a supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to engage in both structured and non-structured sessions focusing on improving their mental health and wellbeing. I facilitate discussions, lead activities and provide learning opportunities on topics such as coping strategies, emotional regulation and building resilience.

Through my work I aim to help to reduce the stigma around mental health and wellbeing that so many people can experience, while providing practical tools to help to enhance our students quality of life. I am lucky in that I also get to work collaboratively with other teams within the trust and outside partners, helping to ensure that our course are accessible and effective for all who attend.

Name something you love about working at The Recovery College

No two days are ever the same, and there are many things I enjoy about working at the college. I love being able to see the personal growth and empowerment of our students, it is really fulfilling to see individuals gain confidence, learn new skills and improve their lives through the courses we offer in a non-judgemental space. Being part of a service who prioritise recovery, resilience and support all adds to the feeling that I'm part of a team who make a difference to people's lives, and really does provide you with the sense that you are doing something more than just a job.

What's next?

The college is always expanding the variety of courses it provides for its students, and I look forward to the opportunities this will bring to everyone. For me in particular I am looking forward to delivering the course that is specifically for our Veterans, and, as a mindfulness practitioner, being able to bring Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy to the college, in addition to our Mindfulness and Wellbeing course. As the college develops, it will be an exciting time to see what further opportunities await.

I look forward to meeting with you all soon.

Thank you to Hazel for answering our Q&A, which staff member would you like to hear from next?
